Brendan Rodgers hoping to have key man available for Crystal Palace match at Selhurst Park

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers gave an injury update on defender Jonny Evans yesterday and said he's hoping his experienced centre-back will be available to play Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The 33-year-old was left out of the Leicester squad to take on Legia Warsaw in the Europa League on Thursday through illness, having initially been set to feature after recovering from a long-standing foot problem.

Evans has only managed three appearances for the Foxes so far this season and hasn't started a Premier League match for them since April.

Now, ahead of the squad's midweek trip to Poland, Rodgers said the club will have to assess Evans ahead of Sunday's trip to south London and hope he will be able to play a part.

“He hasn’t travelled,” Rodgers said at his press conference on Wednesday. “He wasn’t well enough to travel so we’ve kept him behind and we’ll see how he is for the weekend.

“He’s a top defender and when he plays we are better. We just have to manage it. We were hoping he was going to be available for this game, but he’s not.

"We’ll see when we get back and hopefully he’ll be available for the weekend.”

Leicester have only won once in their last five visits to Selhurst Park, with their last match in south London finishing 1-1 in December 2020. Included in that run of games is Palace's 5-0 drubbing of the Foxes in April 2018, which equalled their biggest-ever win in the top flight.

Patrick Vieira doesn't currently have any fresh injury concerns, with Nathan Ferguson and Ebere Eze the only long-term absentees for the Eagles.

Palace are currently 15th in the Premier League table following their draw against Brighton on Monday night, with their 3-0 hammering of Spurs at Selhurst Park still their only victory of the season so far.

Leicester currently sit two places above Palace in the table in 13th but have not won a game in the league since beating Norwich 2-1 away at the end of August.
