Brendan Rodgers gives Leicester City stance on Manchester United transfer target James Maddison

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that the club would 'not necessarily' stay out of James Maddison's way if Manchester United came calling.

United are monitoring the creative midfielder over a potential move next summer as they look to continue their recruitment drive of talented, young and preferably British talent.

The club are in particular need of a new midfielder following the departure of Ander Herrera in the summer, having looked light in the area and are missing a creative spark.

Maddison would certainly provide that as no player created more chances than him last year, in what was his debut season in the Premier League.

He bagged seven goals and assists last term, with two assists to his name so far this season, and at 22 years of age he seems to be a perfect fit for the type of player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to sign.

However, with a contract that doesn't expire until 2023, the Foxes won't let him go easily and United are all too aware about how stubborn they are in negotiations.

Talks for Harry Maguire dragged on all summer long as United tried to haggle down the price but Leicester stood firm, not taking a penny less than £80million.

Should United follow through with their pursuit of Maddison next summer, Rodgers has promised they can expect much of the same.

"No, not necessarily. In a player’s career, there will always be that temptation," the Leicester boss said when asked if the club would stand aside should a big club come in for Maddison by the LeicestershireLive.

"This is a club that doesn’t want to sell its best players, but of course, if there’s a valuation that is met, which meets what the club perceive the player to be worth, then there will be a discussion.

"But it’s not something we want to invite. James is very much a talented player for us. He still has lots of improvements to make as a young player.

"He, along with a number of young players, we want to keep here. But of course, I'm a realist as well. I understand how the market works. But it’s not something we would be looking to entertain."
