Brendan Rodgers explains selection call that "didn't quite work" in Leicester loss

Brendan Rodgers took full responsibility for Leicester's shock exit to Slavia Prague on a frustrating night.

Rodgers' side missed the injured James Maddison and paid the price for only using in-form Harvey Barnes off the bench.

Youri Tielemans was pushed up into a more advanced midfield role in Maddison's absence but he struggled to be effective.

Slavia deservedly progressed after a goalless first leg with second half goals from Lukas Provod and Abdallah Sima.

Rodgers, who was also missing Kelechi Iheanacho, Ayoze Perez and Dennis Praet, rued: “It didn't quite work for us, it is my responsibility.

“I pick the team with the players we have available to try and get a result.

“It didn't quite work as well as I would have liked. We had to push Youri up one.

“It is not necessarily where you would want him.

“Youri is clearly better when he is deeper because he allows us to link the play through to the front players but over the two legs we didn't create enough.

“They were better than us and deserved to go through.

“I was disappointed with the couple of goals – especially the second one.

“You have defend better with greater urgency and that aggression wasn't there.”

Third placed Leicester return to action on Sunday at home to Arsenal in the Premier League.

They are also into the FA Cup quarter-finals next month at home to Manchester United.

Rodgers added: “As I said to the players afterwards you have to learn from it.
“The next two competitions we are fighting for we are all in.

“We have enjoyed the European experience and we want to fight again this year and if we can get into Europe we will be better again next year.”
