Brendan Rodgers explains how Philippe Coutinho transfer paved way for Liverpool glory

Brendan Rodgers has traced Liverpool's recent glut of silverware back to the £142million sale of Philippe Coutinho.

Rodgers snapped up Brazilian Coutinho for a bargain £8.5m in January 2013 from Inter Milan when he was boss of the club.

Rodgers' successor Jurgen Klopp sold the midfielder five years later to Barcelona for mega money.

Rodgers reckons Klopp's investment in defender Virgil van Dijk for £75m in January 2018 plus keeper Alisson for £66m and midfielder Fabinho for £40m, both in July 2018, has really paid off.

Rodgers, now in charge of Leicester, spoke on Friday after Liverpool added the Premier League to their Champions League and Club World Cup trophies.

He said he was delighted to see his old club, owned by US firm FSG since 2010, end their 30-year wait for the title.

Rodgers, boss at Anfield from June 2012-October 2015, analysed: “The money they gained from Philippe has enabled them to buy Van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho - three players who have transformed the team.

“They have been consistently the best team and to get the title after such a long wait, I am delighted for all the supporters.

“It is very fitting as they have been brilliant this year. They have looked like a machine. The team have so much quality with professional players who play at the highest level

“I text Jurgen Klopp last night and Jordan Henderson who I know very well. I am delighted for them all. I also pleased for the ownership who came into football new and each year they have learned about the game and are fantastic owners who deserve that success.”

Leicester are back in action on Sunday when they take on Chelsea in the FA Cup quarter-finals while Liverpool do not play again Thursday, where they will receive a guard of honour from Manchester City in their Premier League clash.
