Brendan Rodgers drops fresh hint to Newcastle United on James Maddison

Newcastle United have received some encouragement from Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers when it comes to one of their main summer targets James Maddison.

The Magpies have had a couple of bids knocked back for the £50million rated star but may yet return before the window slams shut on September 1. But with Leicester seemingly finding themselves under pressure to sell players, Rodgers dropped a hint on outgoing business at his Press conference on Thursday.

Rodgers, speaking before Leicester's trip to Arsenal, said: "The club need to move some players on and then we'll see what that releases. We have no guarantees at this stage."

A move for Maddison remains feasible for Newcastle but they are monitoring a clutch of other targets - including Anthony Gordon. Newcastle are understood to have had a bid for Gordon turned down earlier in the window with a £35million offer made.

Meanwhile, Newcastle's transfer past was mentioned as Leicester sanctioned the exit of Hamza Choudhury. Just 10 months ago, Steve Bruce wanted to sign the City man but United - under Mike Ashley - refused to pay a £2million loan fee for his services.

After saying goodbye to the player, Rodgers said yesterday: "He's going to a fantastic club (Watford) and I'm sure he'll do well.

"He's been a really valuable member of the squad. For him to progress he needs to play more. With just one game a week here it was going to be limited."
