Brendan Rodgers confirms extent of Ricardo Pereira injury after Tyler Morton challenge during Liverpool match

Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Ricardo Pereira has broken his leg following Tyler Morton's challenge on the Leicester City defender during the Carabao Cup clash at Liverpool last week.

Morton caught Pereira with a late challenge in the 10th minute of the quarter-final tie at Anfield.

It resulted in a yellow card for the Reds youngster and it led to the Portuguese full-back eventually going off before half-time.

Rodgers was unhappy with the decision of the referee on the night, Andy Madley, not to dismiss Morton and described the tackle as 'poor' when speaking after the match.

And the ex -Liverpool boss has now revealed Pereira has suffered a fractured fibula, which could see him sidelined for up to two months.

"Ricardo Pereira will be [out for] six to eight weeks,” said Rodgers after Leicester’s 6-3 away loss to Manchester City on Boxing Day.

"That's so frustrating for him with how hard he has worked. For the referee not to see that, it's a fractured fibula and he's lucky it’s not worse."

Pereira sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in March 2020 - the final Premier League match before the first lockdown - after a tackle involving former Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.

That resulted in the 28-year-old spending 10 months on the sidelines.

And Pereira had only returned from a one-month hamstring injury in the cup tie with Liverpool.

After suffering his latest setback, he took to social media on Christmas Eve to send a message to supporters.

"Perspectives. You can say I should feel unlucky after coming off in my returning game and part of me is,” Pereira wrote in a post on social media platform Instagram.

“But after what could be a season-ending tackle, what could be an ACL, I’m feeling lucky it’s none of those even though I’ll be out some time.

"Like I say, it’s perspective. For some it was just a yellow card."
