Brendan Rodgers becomes England 'candidate' but former Celtic boss’ cash demands could scupper any deal

Brendan Rodgers is reportedly one of four names on the English FA's shortlist as their next manager - but finances could scupper their chances of landing the former Celtic boss.

The Northern Irishman has recovered from a calamitous start to the season at Leicester City - who he left Parkhead for in controversial circumstances in 2019 - to replenish his high stock. According to The Telegraph, he plus Maurico Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Steve Holland 'would all be on the list of possible candidates' should Gareth Southgate decide to walk away from the England job after their World Cup quarter-final defeat to France on Saturday.

Pochettino was last with Paris Saint-Germain and Tuchel was at Chelsea at the start of this campaign, while Holland is currently number two in the England set-up. It's claimed that it would take big bucks to bring Rodgers into the English hotseat, as 'Leicester would be due £8million in compensation' from any move.

FA technical director John McDermott will be tasked with recommending Southgate’s successor and 'is a big admirer of Rodgers,' even going as far as tipping him for Tottenham before.

But the Foxes man - who won seven major trophies as Celtic manager - is on £10m-a-year at the King Power stadium in another financial twist. Harry Kane's penalty had restored English hope of progressing to the last four in Qatar after Aurelien Tchouameni's opener, but he soon turned villain as Olivier Giroud put France 2-1 ahead and the Spurs captain ballooned another spot-kick over the bar.
