Brendan Rodgers and Thomas Frank hit out at Premier League following Manchester United decision

Brendan Rodgers has hit out at the Premier League for their lack of support in regards to postponing fixtures.

Leicester submitted a request to the Premier League for their Thursday night game against Tottenham to be called off with nine of their players sidelined with injury or COVID related issues, however, that request was initially shunned by the league.

It was announced on Thursday afternoon that Leicester had got their wish and the game had been postponed, though.

Manchester United's game versus Brentford was postponed earlier in the week after a small COVID outbreak at the club.

United closed down Carrington after last weekend's 1-0 win at Norwich and it's expected that the situation won't improve in time for Saturday's match at home to Brighton. Burnley's fixture against Watford was also postponed on Wednesday.

Rodgers couldn't hide his frustration on the matter when speaking at his pre-match press conference — when it seemed the Foxes' game was going ahead.

“We have looked at it but unfortunately for us we weren’t granted dispensation. It is disappointing because as a team and a club we have always wanted to support all the measures," Rodgers said.

But when we need a little support with the extreme situation we find ourselves in we weren’t able to get it. There was a big doubt about the game against Newcastle on Sunday. For the greater good of the game and for the supporters it went ahead.

“But since then we have picked up more injuries. They are not Covid-related but they are because players are picking up injuries because we can’t rotate the team and the squad because of the number of players we already have out.”

Brentford boss Thomas Frank joined Rodgers' voice against the Premier League on Thursday morning.

"We think we should postpone the full round of Premier League games this weekend," said Frank. "Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs, everyone is dealing with it and having problems.

"To postpone this round and also the Carabao Cup round would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain."

As things stand, United will play Brighton on Saturday lunchtime at Old Trafford but the fixture is already in doubt.
