Brendan Powell rides Fiddlerontheroof as he heads towards £1 million milestone

Brendan Powell will edge closer to the £1 million prize money mark for team Tizzard with victory aboard Fiddlerontheroof.

The jockey is set to ride the Cheltenham Festival runner-up in the Listed Colin Parker Memorial Intermediate Chase at Carlisle on Sunday.

Powell is expected to be a growing force for the stable this season, having won decent races aboard the likes of Golden Chieftain and Hey Big Spender in the past.

Overall he has 64 successes for Colin Tizzard, amassing £934,025 in prize money.

A weekend triumph at the racecourse eight miles south of the Scottish border would see that sum increase to more than £950,000.

Tizzard's son and assistant Joe said on Tuesday: "I think Brendan will ride Fiddlerontheroof on Sunday. He, Jonjo O'Neill and Harry Cobden turn up every Wednesday morning – Jonjo and Harry have their commitments but Brendan has had a really good summer riding for us.

"He rode us a Cheltenham Festival winner when he was a conditional on Golden Chieftain. He's riding very well and he's slotted into the picture.

"We're getting to the busy part of the winter when every Saturday there are two or three meetings and we aim to have runners at two or three meetings.

"You need a team of jockeys. Robbie (Power) is back in Ireland but when he's over we'll continue to use him plenty."

In 2020-21, Powell is on ten winners for the top National Hunt operation, having just one to his name for them in the previous four seasons.

Fiddlerontheroof may head to the Ladbrokes Trophy after his lengthy trip up north, a race which is also an option for Lostintranslation.

He took the same Carlisle contest at the start of a campaign which saw him finish third in the 2020 Gold Cup.

This year's winner Minella Indo heads seven confirmations for the Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal on Saturday – and Tizzard is hopeful their horse can be a force again at the highest level following a wind operation.

“He’s a horse who after his third in the Gold Cup (in 2020) we thought would be very competitive and it just didn’t work last year," he said.

"At home he’s showing all the signs he’s definitely still got it and we still haven’t written him off yet.”
