Brendan O'Carroll's Mrs Brown's Boys tops Christmas viewing numbers for ninth year in row

Brendan O’Carroll’s Agnes Brown proved to be the queen of Christmas TV again as 574,000 tuned in to see her madcap antics.

Mrs Brown’s Boys took top spot in Ireland’s festive ratings battle for a ninth year in a row, it emerged yesterday.

And nine out of the ten most popular Christmas programmes were watched on RTE over the festive period.

It’s A Wonderful Mammy was based on the much-loved 1946 James Stewart film and attracted 574,000 viewers.

The popular comedy achieved a 41% share of the audience and almost 80,000 more viewers than Brendan Grace – A Late Late Show Special.

Fair City viewers were treated to an hour-long special on Christmas Day and witnessed an explosive episode as secrets were revealed when Hayley Collins found out who her real mother was, while Doug and Erica finally found love unbeknownst to his best friend and her fiancée Daragh. 332,700 viewers (21% share) sat down to watch the Christmas special.

The Dublin-born comic died in July after a lung cancer battle and 495,000 watched the programme dedicated to the 68-year-old on December 20.
