Brendan Fraser is said to have "sobbed" through a six-minute standing ovation for his new film The Whale during its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival yesterday.
The actor, 53, who leads the cast of the psychological drama, was among those in attendance when it was screened for an audience at the festival in Venice last night (August 4).
The film - which marks Fraser's first leading role in almost a decade - has received praise from critics and the audience at the screening rose to their feet when the credits rolled.
It's been reported that Fraser "broke down in tears" by the response to the film - due to be released in cinemas later this year - which is being considered the actor's 'comeback'.
According to Variety, the Whale received a six-minute standing ovation at the film festival in Italy over the weekend and the outlet adds that Fraser "sobbed throughout" it.
He isn't the only member of the audience at the screening who became emotional, with other attendees having appeared overwhelmed after the climax of the film.
The outlet's co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh shared footage from the auditorium on Twitter yesterday, which showed Fraser visibly emotional over the standing ovation.
Ramin said that the actor - best known for his role in The Mummy franchise - "sobbed" throughout the standing ovation and even tried to leave the theatre at one point as well.
He however tweeted that the crowd's applause "made him stay", with footage also showing Fraser taking a bow as the audience cheered for him at the recent screening.
Fraser was seen sitting next to the film's director Darren Aronofsky, 53, and his co-star Sadie Sink, 20, whilst in the auditorium for the screening at the film festival in Venice last night.
The Whale sees Fraser play a 600-pound man named Charlie who struggles to reconnect with his teenage daughter Ellie - who is played by Stranger Things alum Sink.
The film - which is based on a play of the same name by playwright Samuel D. Hunter - also stars cast members including Hong Chau, Samantha Morton and Ty Simpkins.
Fraser - whose performance in the film has received praise - previously said the project is "like something you haven't seen before" and may leave a "lasting impression".
