Brenda Blethyn reacts to Gateshead schoolgirl dressing as Vera for World Book Day

Thursday saw children all over the country dress up as their favourite characters for World Book Day.

Among the many youngsters who got into the spirit for the annual event was Gateshead girl Molly McDonald, with the eight-year-old from Heworth standing out from the crowd dressing up as no-nonsense Geordie detective Vera.

And the Whitemere Primary pupil's efforts haven't gone un-noticed by Vera herself, BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Brenda Blethyn who has given her seal of approval to Molly's outfit, which even included forensic gloves.

Responding to ChronicleLive's story on Molly's costume, Brenda tweeted: "Brilliant," before adding "Bravo Molly!"

Well Molly, we'd say that was job done as you can't get a better seal of approval than that!

Speaking to ChronicleLive about the costumes, Molly's mam Sarah said: "Molly's big brother is really into Vera so she's become a big fan too.

"Right after the new series started a few months ago, we were walking to school one day and Molly said 'mam I know what I'm going as' - she was adamant it was going to be Vera!

"She made me go out and get some plastic gloves for the 'forensics' and at one point she was even going to take a whiteboard to school for some investigating!"

While of course Brenda plays Vera on screen, the hit ITV drama is based on a series of books from Whitley Bay author Ann Cleeves. After series 10 of Vera proved another ratings winner for ITV, Brenda delighted fans with the news that series 11 was definitely happening, tweeting: "Thanks to everyone for your lovely messages Re VERA. So glad you enjoyed series 10.

"The cast, crew, supporting artistes and everyone involved in the making of the show very much appreciate your kind messages. We start Filming series 11 in April."
