Breidablik skipper 'idolises' Aberdeen legend Sir Alex Ferguson as buoyant manager insists monumental shock is possible

Breidablik captain Hoskuldur Gunnlaugsson has already managed a result at Pittodrie but wants to go one better by knocking Aberdeen out of Europe.

The midfielder was last in the Granite City on international duty with Iceland’s Under-21s - when he learned all about the legend that is Sir Alex Ferguson.

He got a draw that night but knows Breidablik need to better that if they are to overturn last week’s 3-2 home defeat in the Europa Conference League.

Gunnlaugsson confirmed: “I have been here before. I was here in 2016 with Iceland’s under-21s.

“We played Scotland and it was a 0-0 draw. I have a little emotional moment.

“So I have seen these pictures before but you have to idolise the king, Sir Alex Ferguson.”

Breidablik got a draw away to Austria Vienna in the last round. Gunnlaugsson knows his side fed off the Austrian fans and is looking to do the same in a big crowd at Pittodrie.

He insisted: “It will give us more of a boost.

“We need to just take it as a good thing as we have been playing in Iceland with some regulations with crowds.

“Obviously in Iceland we do not have as big crowds as in Scotland.

“I heard that the game was fully sold ticket wise so it will be a positive experience and we are looking forward to it.”

Coach Oskar Thorvaldsson is also adamant Breidablik are here looking to continue their brave European run.

He insisted: "Aberdeen are really strong but we wouldn't be here if we didn't think we could win the game.

"We know that we can play better than we did in the first leg.

"We can definitely beat them but we have to be at our absolute best and can't afford to make any mistakes.

“We can beat them definitely but having said that we have to be at our absolute best.

“We have to play and perform better than we have all season and cannot really make any mistakes.

“We really, really need a brilliant team performance if we are to get through but we have to believe.

“We need to be stronger defending our set pieces and we need to be more decisive when we enter the last third. We need to get more out of the opportunities we create and make them count.

“We won’t get hundreds of chances but we have to take them.”
