Breer: Browns are focused on improving fundamentals, tackling

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated took in the first day of Cleveland Browns training camp, and the veteran football analyst provided some of his notes on what he saw.

He brought up expected things like Denzel Ward’s rapid progress at cornerback, the improved depth at tight end and more. But the last one really caught my eye.

The final tidbit from Breer’s Twitter threat is one which should resonate with Browns fans who were frustrated with the lack of attention to detail on the Hue Jackson editions of the team. He brought up the focus on improving the fundamentals of football. Namely, the poor tackling which plagued Cleveland last year,

That is music to our ears. Former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams stressed scheme over substance, and that led to a lot of sloppy tackling and missed opportunities. Based on Breer’s observation, the new coaching staff is trying hard to fix that — even in a practice session where tackling is not allowed.
