Ezo momonga flying squirrels in Hokkaido are currently beginning their spring breeding season, with active courtship behaviors seen in trees in Obihiro in the prefecture.

On a pine tree in a park in the city on March 20, two flying squirrels, a male and a female, fiercely chased each other and then stayed on a branch seemingly staring at each other.

The flying squirrel is about 15 centimeters tall and nests in spots such as burrows once used by wild birds. They jump from tree to tree between sunset and dawn. They breed during the day in early spring and early summer, according to the Obihiro Zoo in the city.
