Breathtaking moment iconic Red Arrows perform hair-raising stunt ahead of touch down in Prestwick

Plane watchers were dazzled by a daring Red Arrows display above Prestwick Airport as they marked the 75th anniversary of VJ Day.

Dozens gathered at the scene to witness the impressive jets performing stunts while trailing their famous red, white and blue tail smoke.

The aerobatic troupe moved into formation before nose diving towards the ground at hair-raising speeds on Saturday lunchtime.

But the stealth pilots quickly fanned out and away from danger much to the relief of the enthusiastic crowd.

The ten jets stopped to refuel at the South Ayrshire transport hub before making their way across to Northern Ireland.

The stunning display was part of a UK-wide flypast arranged by the Ministry of Defence to mark the end of the Second World War.

It has now been 75 years since Japan surrendered to the Allied Forces on August 15, 1945.

Members of the public were urged to turn their attention to the skies on Saturday to witness the  Red Arrows flying above each nation’s capital city.

But plans to soar over Edinburgh and the east coast of Scotland were scuppered at the last minute by poor weather conditions.

The flypast is the first of its kind since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
