Briony Ackroyd, one of the first surgeons to perform a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in the same operation, was suspended from work at Walsgrove hospital in Coventry last February.
Her critics allege her complication rate was too high and her patients were not fully informed of the risks.
But her supporters, including former patients, claim she has been subjected to a "witch-hunt" by a male-dominated field in which her woman's touch, such as visiting patients at home, is not appreciated.
They believe Dr Ackroyd, 52, offers women hope after they have suffered the trauma of breast removal. A spokesman for her supporters said: "She seemed to have a very special relationship with all of her patients and she provided a very special and unique service."
A spokesman for the General Medical Council confirmed last night there had been "discussions with the hospital about this doctor" after the hospital contacted them.
An investigation into the surgeon's clinical practice was launched after a family sued the hospital for negligence over an operation that went wrong, according to the Times.
The paper claims Dr Ackroyd would face being struck off the medical register when her case is heard by the GMC, probably later this year.
