Morning everyone. We have an exclusive story on hopes that new federal guidelines released today will help detect hard-to-find cases of breast cancer in what one survivor said was a measure that “will really empower women”.

We conclude our Broken Trust series with the story of how 31-year-old Kardell Lomas had multiple interactions with police and support services but still ended up dead at the hands of a violent man.

Another exclusive reveals evidence Israel used cluster munitions in Lebanon, Amyl and the Sniffers celebrate their Arias wins, and we learn from a master how to make a good cocktail.

Australia

  • Goodbye IGA | Amyl and the Sniffers dominated last night’s Arias in Sydney, winning four awards, including best group as well as album of the year, as lead singer Amy Taylor said she’d “probably never have to work in IGA ever again”.

  • Exclusive | New federal guidelines released today will advise GPs to provide additional care to women with higher breast density, which can make cancers harder to detect in mammograms.

  • Nature deal | Senior Liberal MPs are optimistic a deal can be reached with Labor on a watered-down version of its new nature laws, allowing them to be passed in parliament’s final sitting week of the year. The Greens said any deal with the Coalition would show the laws have been “written for big business”.

  • ‘Sleight of hand’ | The real impact of deforestation is being hidden by a “sleight of hand” in the official figures, according to researchers who suggest some recorded new growth is misclassified or not equivalent to losses in species-heavy forests.

  • Meta ban | Australian Facebook and Instagram users under 16 will be notified from today that their accounts will be deactivated by 10 December as Meta begins to comply with the Albanese government’s social media ban.

World

  • Exclusive | Israel used widely banned cluster munitions in its recent 13-month war in Lebanon, photos of munition remnants in south Lebanon seen by the Guardian suggest.

  • Justice done? | Donald Trump is expected to sign a bill to compel the justice department to release more files related to Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased child sexual abuser. You can keep up to date at our US blog here.

  • Exclusive | Oil-producing countries need to acknowledge the rise of clean energy and rich countries will have to provide more assurances on finance if the chasm between negotiating nations at Cop30 is to be bridged, the president of the summit has said.

  • ‘State terrorism’ | Poland’s foreign affairs minister has described the sabotage attack on Poland’s rail system as “an act of state terrorism” ordered by Russia, as he announced the closure of the last remaining Russian consulate in the country. In Brussels the EU executive has pledged to speed up the movement of European armies and tanks across the continent.

  • Added complication | A rare early calculating machine looks likely to stay in France after Christie’s withdrew it from auction pending a definitive ruling from a Paris court on whether or not it can be exported.

The Coalition’s climate shift: what’s at risk for Australia?

Our climate and environment editor, Adam Morton, and Reged Ahmad factcheck the opposition’s new energy claims and discuss why dropping net zero is dragging the country backwards in the battle against climate change.

In-depth

Kardell Lomas was six months pregnant when her body was found in the boot of a car. Her partner, Traven Fisher, a convicted child sex offender, was later jailed for her manslaughter.

The Kamilaroi and Mununjali woman repeatedly sought help to escape Fisher in the months before her death – from domestic violence support services and the police. She had 24 interactions with various agencies and she disclosed fears for her safety on numerous occasions. Police records and body-worn camera footage show officers failed to take adequate protective action on her behalf.

Her family is now calling for answers. Her younger brother, Adair Lomas, told the Guardian: “What if Kardell was white, what would have happened? I think the police and the system would have taken her seriously.” Amy McQuire writes that Kardell’s heartbreaking apology to police for “the fuck around” is a moment that should shame all Australians.

Sport

  • Cricket | Mitchell Starc has admitted that Australia’s players are upset at the decision to shift the opening Ashes Test from its traditional home of Brisbane’s Gabba to Perth Stadium. Geoff Lemon asks if it’s right that everyone is fascinated by the age of the Australian squad, while Geoff is one of our writers making their Ashes predictions.

  • Cricket | Ben Stokes is aiming to become one of the “lucky few” England captains to claim an away Ashes victory as he called on his players to forget a 15-year barren spell in Australia and “create our own history”. His 12-man squad has the surprise inclusion of off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.

  • Football | There’s live football this morning in the European Women’s Champions League where Wolfsburg host Manchester United.
