Breakthrough Youth Project host teacher match for organ donation campaign

A group of young people from West Belfast gave up free time this week to raise awareness for organ donation.

The kids, from Coláiste Feirste , are part of the Breakthrough Youth Project, which aims to give the youth new life skills through a supportive school environment.

And on Thursday, they beat the teacher side 3-0, with Ballymurphy tot Dáithí Mac Gabhann giving them encouragement along the way.

The three-year-old is currently on the routine waiting list for a heart transplant after being born with a very rare condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome .

Speaking after the game, Dáithí's dad Máirtín said they "couldn't be prouder of the kids" for helping them spread the message.

He told Belfast Live: “I’m a past pupil of Coláiste Feirste, and I’m doing a bit of sub teaching in there at the minute so I’ve got to know the lads in  the Breakthrough Youth Programme well.

"They were inspired into action by watching the Croí Briste programme, and they just wanted to help any way the could. We feel that spreading awareness of organ donation will give Dáithí the best chance, and we couldn’t be happier and prouder that this group of lads decided to help us.

"We have amazing young people in our society, and we probably don’t celebrate how amazing they are enough. The lads deserve all the credit, and the even beat their teachers 3-0 in front of the whole school.”
