Wuhan tornado: Several missing and scores injured after tornado blasts city

At least 40 people have been injured and several are still missing after a tornado hit Wuhan in China on Friday, reports say.

Extreme weather hit the city in the province of Hubei at around 8:40pm - causing trees to snap and construction sheds to topple.

Official Xinhua news agency said none of the injured people - thought to total 41 - were in a life-threatening condition.

At least six people are said to be missing.

Dramatic video shows large items being blown down the streets as people battle to save their belongings, with debris filling the air.

Although not common, China does occasionally suffer destructive tornados.

At least 99 people were killed by a storm which produced multiple tornadoes in 2016.

Another tornado also struck the town of town in the city of Suzhou in east China's Jiangsu province on Friday.

People have posted pictures and video of the destruction on social media (PDChina/Twitter)

One person is said to be dead and 21 injured, Xinhua said.

The winds damaged electricity facilities and toppled several factory buildings in Shengze town, the city fire brigade told the agency.

Wuhan, which has a population of around 11 million people, is perhaps best known to many in Britain as the place where coronavirus is said to have originated.
