Woman who died after road collision with police vehicle is named

A woman who died after being hit by a police vehicle on Sunday has been named as Margaret McCarron.

The 58-year-old from Motherwell was walking on Merry Street in the town when she was struck by the marked Ford Transit.

The Force has since launched an investigation into the incident which took place around 8.20pm on Sunday.

Police Scotland have also released a picture of Margaret and stated she was previously known by the surname Borland.

Margaret was taken to University Hospital Wishaw but was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her next of kin was made aware of her death and her family are being supported by specialist officers.

Neither of the police officers within the van were injured.

An investigation into the circumstances is being carried out by Police Scotland’s Road Policing Unit and the incident has been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).

Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of 19 September.

The PIRC has been instructed by Crown Office and the Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) to investigate the death of Margaret McCarron.

Its report on the circumstances will be submitted to COPFS at the conclusion of its investigation.

Sergeant John Tait, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said after the incident: “Our enquiries into this incident are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has any other information to come forward.

“We would be particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam or private CCTV footage from the area.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3309 of September 19.”
