Woman dead after 'receiving multiple injuries' in 'overnight incident' in Dublin city centre

A woman has died after "receiving multiple injuries" in an "overnight incident", it has emerged this morning.

The woman, in her 30s, was rushed to St James's Hospital after receiving "a number of injuries" in an apartment in the Bonham St area of the Liberties, Dublin 8 at around 3.40am.

It is reported that she was stabbed. She was pronounced dead a short time later, gardai said.

A man in his 30s has been arrested in connection with the incident and is being held in Kevin St Garda Station.

The Bridgefoot St, Usher St and Usher's Island areas of the Liberties and the quays in Dublin city centre have been closed off to the public this morning.

Dublin Live reports diversions have been put in place around the affected areas. Commuters have been asked to use an alternative route.

Earlier, a Garda spokeswoman had said a woman had passed away after "receiving multiple injuries" in an "overnight incident".

Later, a statement from gardai read: "Gardaí in Kevin St. are investigating an incident in which a female received a number of injuries in an apartment in Bonham St area of Dublin 8 in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 26th of June 2019 at approximately 03.40am.

"The female (30s) was taken to St. James's Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

"A man (30s) was arrested in connection with this incident and is currently detained in Kevin St. Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. Investigations are ongoing.

"The scene remains closed off and a number of traffic diversions are in place. Updates to follow."
