Wallsend 'murder': Three-week-old baby boy stabbed to death is named

A baby boy who died in a stabbing in which his mother was seriously injured can now be named.

Three-week-old Andrei Stefan died in hospital on Sunday following the incident in Portland Close in Wallsend, North Tyneside, which police were called to at around 2.15pm on October 2.

A reporting restriction had originally been in place preventing the child being identified, but this was lifted at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on Wednesday.

The boy's mother, Andreea Stefan, 21, was also taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but police now say that she is in a stable condition.

Following the incident Denis Erdinch Beytula, 27, was charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Cole, of Northumbria Police, said of Andrei's death: "This is a devastating time for the baby's family. Specialist officers continue to offer them support and I know the community in Wallsend are by their side too.

"It is impossible to imagine what they are going through and I would ask the public to continue to respect the family's privacy at this time.

"A man has been charged in relation to the incident and we will continue to work closely with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) as the case moves forward."

Beytula, of Portland Close, Wallsend, appeared at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court on October 3, where he was remanded into custody.

He is now due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on October 31.

Lifting the reporting restriction that prevented the naming of the boy, district judge Bernard Begley acknowledged that the baby's death was a "tragic case".
