Wales star Liam Williams ruled out for rest of Rugby World Cup after accidental collision in training

Liam Williams has been ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby World Cup after sustaining an ankle injury.

The Welsh Rugby Union confirmed the injury in the early hours of Friday, after news broke of Williams' ankle worry on Thursday.

WalesOnline reported then that the injury is so bad Williams was said to be on crutches.

A WRU statement issued on Friday morning said: "Liam Williams has been ruled out for the remainder of the Rugby World Cup following an ankle injury sustained in an accidental collision during training.

"His prognosis will be established in the forthcoming days.

"No replacement has been called up at this stage."

Leigh Halfpenny now slots in at full-back to pick up his 85th cap against South Africa, linking up with Josh Adams and George North in the back-three.

Speaking later on Friday morning in his press conference in Tokyo, Wales boss Warren Gatland said: "Liam's undoubtedly a big loss from an attacking perspective and what he’s achieved in the last year.

"Bringing in the experience of Leigh Halfpenny gives us a different element.

"Defensively, he’s the best full back in the world in his aerial game and coverage.

"We had a long debate about whether we started Leigh in the first place and move Liam to the wing.

"Liam is a world-class player but to bring in someone like Leigh Halfpenny and then Ross Moriarty coming in, too.

"We don’t think we’re weaker."
