Vienna 'gas explosion' causes several floors to collapse in two buildings

Ten people are believed to have been injured in a suspected gas explosion which caused the partial collapse of two buildings in Vienna.

The explosion has caused the collapse of several floors across the two buildings, police say.

Four people are seriously injured and six others have received minor injuries, according to reports.

Footage of the incident appears to show a group helping an injured person across the dusty street.

"(It's) as if a bomb flew in and tore a huge hole in the facade," a spokesman for the fire brigade said.

Police, rescue services and the fire brigade are currently at the scene.

'Vibrations' were felt several hundred meters away from the incident, Orf.at reports.

The explosion happened at about 4.30pm.

Shocking pictures show the destruction caused and debris strewn across the large street.

Crowds are gathering and people appear to be looking up at the damaged blocks.

The police said the partial collapse of several floors took place in up to two buildings in the fourth district of the Austrian capital, which borders the city centre.

In a statement, the fire service said: "The cause is still unclear, a gas explosion is suspected."
