UK weather forecast: Met Office EXTENDS Storm Hannah warning for 75mph winds

A yellow weather warning has been extended to cover most of England and Wales as the worst spring storm in years builds in the Atlantic.

Gusts of up to 80mph are forecast to hit the south-west coast by Friday evening, causing 10m waves to smash into the shore.

When Storm Hannah reaches Britain later today it will be the strongest to hit the landmass in April or May for at least four years.

The Met Office's yellow warning was extended this morning to stretch across the whole of Wales and large parts of England.

The revised forecast has the worst of the storm hitting the south and middle of the country, with the yellow warning stopping north of Manchester.

Delays on the road and rails are likely and the chance of power cuts is high.

Ireland is set to bare the brunt of the storm, which is expected to make land this evening.

The weather service has issued an orange status advisory for large parts of the landmass as winds pushing 80mph look likely.

Arctic air from Iceland will see washouts and send temperatures plummeting to just 10-12C for most of Saturday, up to 15C colder than last weekend's Easter heatwave.

Less than a week ago temperatures hit 25.5C on Easter Saturday, leading to the hottest ever Easter Monday.

“There could well be trees down and disruption to travel and ferries, with rough seas.

“It's a complete contrast to last weekend, with 25C then but 11C this weekend for some.”

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Storm Hannah will bring a mega contrast to last weekend, with nasty conditions and cold polar air from Iceland following on Saturday.”
