UK records 48,854 new Covid infections and 52 deaths as cases up 22% in a week

The number of Covid-19 cases in the UK has risen by 48,854 in the past 24 hours, official government figures show.

A further 52 people have also died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.

Yesterday, 54,073 cases and 132 deaths were recorded across the country.

Last Sunday 39,899 cases were recorded and 107 deaths.

Earlier today, the UK Health Security Agency confirmed 1,239 more Omicron infections have been reported across the country.

The total number of people who contracted the new coronavirus strain across the UK now stands at 3,137.

As the variant continues to spread, Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for the UK Health Security Agency, said people should keep their social contacts to a minimum if they want to avoid catching Covid-19 and missing out on Christmas with their family.

Having less contact with other people, taking lateral flow tests before meeting anyone, working from home, wearing a face covering, keeping areas well ventilated, getting vaccinated and having the booster jab are all measures people can take, she said.

Dr Hopkins was asked if people should lie low in the next week or two if they want to avoid Omicron and spend Christmas with their families.

She told Times Radio: "We've spent two years, almost two years now living with this virus. We know how it transmits. It transmits when we're with other people.

"And therefore when we are coming up to a time where we will have engagements that we want to make, family that we want to see, then ensuring that we have less contacts before those is important so that we don't transmit to others."

Her remarks came as Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi said the UK is in a "race" to get the Covid-19 booster to eligible adults "as quickly as possible".

Mr Zahawi confirmed that there are " cases in hospital with Omicron " and warned that tens of thousands of Brits could end up hospitalised.

The new strain is now estimated to make up one in three cases in London.

Dr Hopkins said more Covid-19 measures may be needed, adding that the Government has "very difficult" decisions ahead.

She explained: "I think that the restrictions that the Government have announced are sensible. I think that we may need to go beyond them.

"But we'll need to watch carefully what happens with hospitalisations."

From this week, Covid-19 booster jabs will be available to millions more people in England as cases of the Omicron variant continue to rise.

The national booking system will open to everyone aged 30 to 39 from Monday so they can make appointments to get a booster three months on from their second Covid-19 jab.

The move comes amid concerns the UK is facing a major wave of infections in January.

There are around 7.5 million people aged 30 to 39, and 3.5 million of those are eligible for boosters from Monday, NHS England said.

Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said: "The Covid-19 booster programme is accelerating rapidly and more than 22 million people in the UK have already received their top-up, securing vital protection ahead of Christmas.

"This is our national mission - the most recent data shows boosters are the essential defence against Omicron and we are doing everything in our power to get jabs into arms as quickly as possible.

"We are now expanding the offer to over-30s, so please come forward as quickly as possible to get boosted and help our country get ahead in this race with the variant."
