UK coronavirus hospital death toll rises to 34,094 as four more lives lost

The number of coronavirus patients to die in UK hospitals has risen by four to 34,094, health authorities said this afternoon.

Of these latest fatalities, two were in England and two in Wales.

No deaths were reported in Scotland, while Northern Ireland has yet to release a daily figure.

The English victims were aged 89 and 91, and both had underlying health conditions, NHS England said.

The figure does not include those who died in other settings, including care homes and private addresses.

Yesterday there were five hospital deaths recorded, while government data revealed 1,012 new infections had been confirmed in 24 hours.

Last Sunday the daily death toll was 10, while two weeks ago it was eight.

The highest daily increase on a Sunday since the start of the pandemic was on April 12, when 710 fatalities were confirmed.

Reports had earlier emerged that Public Health England (PHE) is to be scrapped and replaced by a new organisation set up specifically to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

Amid claims ministers have been unhappy and frustrated with PHE’s response to the coronavirus crisis, Health Secretary Matt Hancock is said to be set to announce this week that the pandemic response work of PHE will be merged with NHS Test and Trace.

Earlier today it emerged that cancer survival rates are set to plummet due to coronavirus, according to analysis by a think tank.

The Institute for Public Policy Research and Carnall Farrar healthcare consultancy found that five-year survival rates could drop from 16.2% to 15.4% for lung cancer, from 85% to 83.5% for breast cancer, and from 58.4% to 56.1% for colorectal cancer.

The study suggests the main cause of this decline will be late diagnosis and treatment of cancer caused by the pivot in the NHS towards prioritising Covid-19 patients.
