UK coronavirus deaths increase by 260 in a day - 1,019 people have now been killed by the virus, with more than 17,000 testing positive

More than 1,000 people across the UK have died from coronavirus, the government has said.

The number of people to have tested positive for COVID-19, as of 9am today (Saturday, March 28), stands at 17,089 - a rise of 2,546 from 14,543 on Friday.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) said 1,019 people have now died having contracted the virus - an increase of 260 on Friday's figures.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is among those to have tested positive - as is Health Secretary Matt Hancock.

The health expert leading the government's response, Public Health England chief medical officer Chris Whitty, said he was experiencing symptoms on Friday.

The DHSC has been forced to take on a new approach to recording confirmed cases and deaths as the government, NHS England and Public Health England rapidly scale up the number of tests for COVID-19 completed each day.

Figures are now reported via a new automated system, which will provide the number of cases and deaths recorded in the previous 5pm to 5pm period.

A Department of Health and Social Care tweet read: "As of 9am 28 March, a total of 120,776 have been tested: 103,687 negative. 17,089 positive.

"As of 5pm on 27 March, of those hospitalised in the UK, 1,019 have sadly died."

Revealing he had contracted the virus, PM Mr Johnson said: "Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.

"I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.

"Together we will beat this."
