UK coronavirus death toll rises by 206 but infections down on a week ago

The coronavirus has claimed the lives of another 206 people in the UK - taking the total to 55,230.

There was a further 15,450 cases reported in the latest daily figures, down from 18,662 cases recorded on Sunday.

Today's figures show there has been 5,279 less infections recorded today than a week ago - when 20,729 cases were recorded.

A total of 1,527,495 have now tested positive in the UK since the pandemic began.

The latest figures come as a borough in Kent now has the highest coronavirus infection rate in England, new data shows.

Latest figures show Swale had 631.7 cases per 100,000 people in the week to 18 November - propelling it above Hull, which was England's worst-affected place last week.

It follows an alarming rise in cases, which saw the number of new cases in Swale more than double in seven days.

Experts have warned that southern England is fast overtaking parts of the north which have been heavily hit by the virus.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has outlined plans to bring the country out of nationwide lockdown.

Mr Johnson, who is self-isolating, remotely revealed his post-lockdown plans to MPs in the Commons at 3.30pm.

Boris Johnson will also speak to the nation at 7pm alongside Professor Chris Whitty, the chief medical officer, and Andrew Pollard, Director of the Oxford Vaccine Group.

It came as hopes have been raised that vaccines could end the coronavirus pandemic after a British jab was found to be up to 90% effective in preventing Covid-19.

Earlier today AstraZeneca and Oxford University said their jab is effective in stopping most people from contracting coronavirus and falling seriously ill, with some indications that it can also prevent people passing the virus to others.
