UK coronavirus death toll reaches 45,300 as 27 more people die from Covid-19

The UK coronavirus death toll has increased by 27 in the past 24 hours to a total of 45,300.

Hospital deaths in England today were as low as eight, with one in Wales and none in Scotland.

The figure of overall deaths is higher than the increase last Sunday when 21 deaths were recorded in the previous 24 hours.

The figures, released by the Department of Health and Social Care, includes fatalities that happened weeks or even months ago that have only been added to the official statistics in the previous 24 hours.

Forty deaths were recorded on Saturday and 114 on Friday. The rolling average continues to trend down albeit at a much slower rate than mid April when the pandemic peaked in the UK.

Separate figures published by the UK's statistics agencies show there have now been 55,700 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

The Government also said there had been a further 726 lab-confirmed cases. Overall, a total of 294,792 cases have been confirmed.

The Department for Health and Social Care said on Friday it was "pausing" publication of daily death figures for the whole of the UK after Health Secretary Matt Hancock ordered a review into claims by researchers that there were "statistical flaws" in the way they are calculated.

Earlier today the UK's National Statistician, Professor Sir Ian Diamond, said he had not noticed a rise in cases since the lockdown measures were eased.

When asked if he had expected to see an increase in the number of infections as lockdown was lifted, he told Sophy Ridge on Sunday that it depended on “how the population works”.

He added: “The message has been quite consistent in that we must be alert and we must be socially distanced and if we are really super careful and if we are able to follow all the rules it does seem to me that we should expect there to be a relative flatline at the moment.

“Clearly over the autumn we will need to be ever vigilant.”

The Prime Minister has widened his rift with the government’s top scientists by effectively ruling out another national coronavirus lockdown.

Boris Johnson said imposing tough restrictions on the country for a second time would be a “nuclear” option which he did not want to take.
