BREAKING: Traffic chaos following accident on M74 as emergency services remain on scene

Emergency services are currently on the scene of a road accident on the M74, with motorists told to expect delays.

Traffic was brought to a halt as the road closed between Hamilton and Larkhall, at junctions six and seven.

Reports suggest the incident happened shortly after 3pm, before traffic began queuing on the motorway throughout the late-afternoon.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Lanarkshire Live: "Police were called around 3.30pm following a report of a four vehicle road crash on the M74 southbound near junction seven.

"Emergency services attended and there does not appear to be any life-threatening injuries. The road did not close."

Drivers were tailed back as far junction five with one lane eventually opening back up.

However, Traffic Scotland have advised motorists to expect delays as emergency services remain on the scene.

A spokesperson said: "All lanes restricted Southbound due to road traffic incident. Drivers are advised to approach with caution and allow for longer than normal journey times."
