Tottenham confirm sixth summer exit as defender seals season-long loan move

Joe Rodon has departed Tottenham and completed a season-long loan move to French side Rennes. Joining Spurs from Swansea City in October 2020, the Wales international has unfortunately played a bit-part role in north London ever since and has found first-team opportunities extremely hard to come by.

Having only made three appearances in the Premier League last season, the player was always going to need to move on this summer to find regular football elsewhere with the 2022 World Cup on the horizon. He will now get that in Ligue 1 with Rennes, who have the option to purchase the player at the end of his loan deal for €20million (£16.7million).

Missing out on Tottenham's tour of South Korea through illness, Rodon did get some minutes under his belt against Rangers but he did not make the trip to Israel for their final match of the summer against Roma. The centre-back instead remained behind to complete his move to the French outfit, something Antonio Conte made clear in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Roma fixture.

"Yeah Joe Rodon is another good player and don't forget that in November there is the World Cup and many players want to play and play regularly. Also to prepare themselves for this important competition," he explained. "I think that when the thoughts from the club and the players are the same we try to find the best solution for both."

Set to gain some vital experience playing in Ligue 1, Rodon will also get the chance to play in the Europa League in 2022/23 after Les Rennais finished last campaign in fourth. The Welshman becomes the sixth player to depart Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, following Cameron Carter-Vickers, Steven Bergwijn and Jack Clarke's permanent exits and Dane Scarlett and Troy Parrott's loan moves.
