Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Villarreal have exercised the option to sign versatile defender Juan Foyth on a permanent basis following a successful loan stint with the Spanish club.
Foyth joined the UEFA Europa League winners on a season-long loan back in October and enjoyed a hugely successful campaign under the stewardship of former Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
Villarreal had the option to sign Foyth on a permanent basis if he impressed and as reported last night, Spurs have now confirmed that they have now taken up that offer.
Foyth joined Spurs back in August 2017, signing from Argentinian club Estudiantes. He made a total of 32 appearances, scoring one goal, which came in a 1-0 away win over Crystal Palace in November 2018.
It soon became clear that the defender, who can operate at either right-back or centre-back, was not going to figure in Jose Mourinho's plans, meaning he joined Villarreal on loan in the early stages of the 2020/21 season for the remainder of the campaign.
Foyth's decision to make the move to Spain proved to be a masterstroke, as he thrived under Emery's ideas and thinking, quickly becoming a mainstay in the Yellow Submarine starting line-up.
After starting out in defensive-midfield, Foyth then moved to centre-back and then to right-back, with the latter of those three roles most certainly bringing the very best out him.
He played a key role in the club's run to the Europa League title, featuring in 12 of their 15 matches in the competition.
He played 80 minutes of the final, before a pulsating penalty shoot-out saw Emery's side come out on top against Manchester United in Gdansk.
In total, he made 32 appearances during his loan spell, scoring one goal, and he will now be looking to increase that tally in years to come.
