Tottenham complete signing of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis

Tottenham have completed the signing of Real Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso.

The Argentinian midfielder has joined the club on an initial loan deal with a €16m (£14.7m) fee attached, with an obligation to buy for a €60m (£55m) fee at the end of the deal.

It is believed the move will only become permanent automatically if Tottenham qualify for the Champions League, otherwise they get the option to activate the deal.

Lo Celso has been Tottenham's top transfer target in recent weeks, and they have now landed their man on deadline day just hours after seeing their move for Paulo Dybala fall through.

A Tottenham statement read: "We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for the season-long loan signing of Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis Balompié with an option to make the transfer permanent.

"The attacking midfielder will wear the number 18 shirt this season."

The goalscoring midfielder is viewed as the long-term successor to Chrstian Eriksen as he enters the final year of his contract.

He impressed in La Liga last season with nine goals and five assists in 32 appearances.

Lo Celso could be fast-tracked into first team action with Dele Alli set to miss the start of the Premier League campaign with a recurring hamstring injury.

Spurs have also been attempting to sign Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon but have been unable to agree a fee with the Portuguese club.

With the Dybala move collapsing, Lo Celso becomes Tottenham's fourth summer signing, joining fellow midfielders Tanguy Nbombele and Jack Clarke and left-back Ryan Sessegnon, who joined earlier in the day.

Sessegnon has penned a five-year deal at Spurs after joining in a deal which could rise to £30m from Fulham .
