Tory minister Zac Goldsmith loses his Richmond Park seat

Tory Zac Goldsmith has lost his Richmond Park seat in one of the most high profile scalps of the 2019 General Election .

Mr Goldsmith held the seat from 2010 to 2016.

In 2016 he stood unsuccessfully as the Tory candidate for London Mayor, in a campaign beset by accusations of racism towards Labour rival Sadiq Khan .

Later the same year, he resigned from the Conservative Party in protest at Theresa May's decision to give the go-ahead to Heathrow Airport expansion.

He stepped down as an MP, triggering a by-election in which he stood as an independent candidate.

Despite promising not to stand as a Tory candidate in the next election, he stood as a Conservative in 2017, winning back the seat with a slim majority of 45.

Boris Johnson appointed him a minister of state for International Development earlier this year.

Richmond Park is heavily pro-Remain - and YouGov's most recent MRP polling predicted Mr Goldsmith would lose again to Sarah Olney.

Born in Surrey, Ms Olney is a qualified accountant and has worked for Barclays.

After losing her seat in 2017, she spent some time working as chief of staff to Sir Vince Cable.

She's described the rivalry between herself and Mr Goldsmith as a difference in values.

She said: "Two years ago we lost by such a small amount, and to such an ardent Brexiteer who didn’t really reflect the values of those he represented.

“For him to go to Parliament instead of me was agonising. I’m certainly much closer to the mood of the local residents as far as Brexit is concerned than he is.”
