Torre Espacio bomb threat: Madrid skyscraper home to Brit embassy is evacuated

A skyscraper which is home to the British Embassy in Madrid has been evacuated because of a bomb alert received by telephone.

Police are understood to be clearing Torre Espacio (Space Tower), Spain’s fourth highest skyscraper and the 24th highest in Europe, floor by floor.

The building in the Spanish capital's financial district is also home to the embassies of Canada, Australia and the Netherlands.

A police spokeswoman told Reuters a bomb threat was received by telephone at the Australian Embassy.

A Spanish police spokesman said: “The police are working at this moment on evacuating the Torre Espacio skyscraper, which is being cleared for security reasons."

Spain's national police force posted a tweet urging people in or near the building to follow the instructions of the security staff.

The Australian Embassy tweeted: "The @AusEmbEsp will remain close for the rest of today, Tuesday 16 April, until further notice.

"Apologies for any inconvenience."

The 750-ft skyscraper has 57 floors and around 2,000 people work there on a daily basis.

Known as the Space Tower in English, Torre Espacio was built in 2009 and designed by US architect Henry N Cobb.
