'Three injured' after gunman enters middle school as police arrest male student

At least three people have been injured in a school shooting, reports say.

A male student has reportedly been arrested following the attack on Rigby Middle School in Rigby, Idaho, US, today.

Students were evacuated from the school as police descended on the scene, however two pupils and one adult suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The shooting reportedly took place at around 9am, with police putting the school on lockdown after arriving at the scene.

One parent said the gunman tried to break into his son's classroom, however he was thwarted by the locked doors.

Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin said: "Today we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter. We had a school shooting here at Rigby Middle School.

"What we know so far is the shooter has been apprehended. There is no further threat to the students."

Officers say the parents of the victims have been informed, LocalNews8 reports.

Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson told EastIdahoNews.com that a male student has been arrested.

Meanwhile Idaho Falls Fire Department spokeswoman Kerry Hammon confirmed that paramedics are transporting the three victims to hospital.

One parent, whose son attends the school, told EastIdahoNews that she was in shock over the shooting.

She said: "You don't think it's going to happen to you, ever. I never thought it would happen here."

One pupil sent her parents a text saying 'we are in a lockdown, I love you' during the shooting, EastIdahoNews reports.
