Local elections: Furious Tory heckles Theresa May shouting 'resign!' in polls disaster

Theresa May has been heckled by a furious Tory activist shouting at her to resign after losing more than 400 seats in the local elections.

The angry man confronted the Prime Minister as she faced the music at the Welsh Tory conference today.

With councillors and MPs calling for her to quit, the man shouted: "Why don't you resign? The National Convention doesn't want you, we don't want you."

Groans erupted and the crowd shouted “out out out!” at the man, who was escorted out.

Mrs May tried to laugh off the attack, introducing herself in Welsh - and joking she usually received a friendly welcome in North Wales, home to her walking holidays.

But anger was mounting against the Prime Minister as she refused to say "sorry" despite losing control of a string of Home Counties strongholds including Basildon, Folkestone and Southend-on-Sea.

She added: “This is a difficult time for our party and these election results are a symptom of that.” She said the Tories were in power at a momentous point in history, and “what is momentous and historic is seldom simple and straightforward.

“But I think there was a simple message from yesterday’s elections to both us and the Labour Party- just get on and deliver Brexit.”

The Tories lost hundreds of seats as local councillors were punished for a Parliament in chaos.

But Labour failed to seize the spoils from the Tories' loss - with huge gains instead going to the Lib Dems, who boasted of their best night ever.
