Independent Group registering as political party called Change UK

The Independent Group has said they are registering to become a political party and have said their name will Change UK.

The group of 11 MPs who broke away from the Tories and Labour will stand in European elections - if they happen.

And in order to register they have had to choose an interim leader - former Tory MP Heidi Allen will fill the role.

They have also had to submit a logo and draft constitution to the Electoral Commission who will rule on if they can become a party in the coming weeks.

Commenting on the application Heidi Allen MP said:  "Today marks a huge step forward on The Independent Group's journey to becoming a fully-fledged political party, so I am delighted to have been chosen as our Interim Leader.

“If we are to deliver on our ambition to change politics for the better, it is vital that we attract support from people from every walk of life, every political background and none. Coming into the House of Commons from running my manufacturing business in 2015, I have seen with my own eyes how improved our political system would be if it harnessed the diverse skills and experience of our country.

“We in Change UK, as we hope to be known, don't just dream about a fairer and better future for our country, we are determined to unleash it through hard work, passion and shared endeavour.”

The next scheduled contest is not until 2022, but the turmoil in Westminster politics means that an earlier election remains a distinct possibility.

The group, which formed last month, was created after seven Labour MPs broke away from the party over concerns about Brexit, the anti-Semitism scandal and Jeremy Corbyn's leadership.

Three pro-EU Tories, Anna Soubry, Sarah Wollaston and Heidi Allen, followed suit and a further Labour MP, Joan Ryan, took their total to 11.

The 11 hoped other former colleagues would quit and swell their ranks.

But none have emerged.

Registering as a political party means the Independent Group will finally have to declare major donations with the Electoral Commission.

The 11 MPs boasted they’d had “thousands” of small donations after setting up last month.

And they won the support of big-money former Labour donor Sir David Garrard, the property tycoon.

But because the group is not a registered political party, it did not have to declare donations unless they come to its individual MPs.

And critics said the group could conceal donors’ identities if they used a private firm linked to the MPs called Gemini A Ltd.

The vehicle was set up by MP Gavin Shuker and based above a Wetherspoons in Altrincham called The Unicorn.

A party source called Labour  claims that they were initially set up as party to avoid naming donors "absolute bollocks"
