A terrifying tornado has been filmed ripping through residential areas of Kansas tearing off roofs, upending trees and overturning cars on Friday night.
Footage shows the twister swirling past houses in Andover, east of Wichita, above a menacingly dark sky and leaving a trail of destruction.
One person wrote: "Destructive tornado tearing through Andover KS minutes ago."
Shocking footage at the Andover YMCA shows several cars that have been smashed into the walls of the building.
There have been widespread reports of damage to homes as the tornado moved eastwards and hit Andover just after 8pm local time.
A Twitter user wrote: "There’s quite a bit of storm damage in a neighborhood east of Harry and Andover Road. Trees uprooted, roofs gone, walls collapsed. Lots of first responders in the area. Neighbors are checking on each other."
Several other tornadoes have also touched down across Nebraska and Kansas as a large storm system sweeps eastward from the central Rockies into the Midwest.
"A tornado is on the ground. TAKE COVER NOW!" wrote the US National Weather Service (NWS) Topeka office on it's website.
The service has a tornado weather warning in place until 4am in Kansas.
NWS Kansas City tweeted: "Western KC metro may see 1" hail and strong winds from the incoming storms. Please find shelter if you are in western KC and surrounding areas!"
One video shows a large building that had its roof ripped off and windows blown out from the storm.
There have been reports of hail stones, two inches in size, falling in the storms.
The US National Weather Team stated on Friday: "A storm system moving into the central US as of Friday afternoon will likely support the development of severe thunderstorms across portions of the central to southern Plains late this afternoon into tonight.
"A combination of favorable wind shear and the northward transport of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will lead to the development of strong and severe thunderstorms beginning late Friday afternoon over the Great Plains.
"There will be the potential for significant tornadoes, destructive wind gusts and very large hail with a focus over southeastern Nebraska into eastern Kansas as highlighted by the Moderate Risk in place by the Storm Prediction Center."
Tornadoes are not uncommon in Kansas and Andover was hit by a devastating F5 twister in 1991 that killed 15 people and injured over 200 others.
