"We can confirm that one person has died and his next of kin have been informed. We are now liaising with the Health and Safety Executive."

Mid and West Wales and Fire Rescue Service and the Hazard Area Response Team are also on the scene, the fire service said.

This is the second incident at the steelworks this year. In April, two people suffered minor injuries in a series of explosions at the Port Talbot site.

The incident happened when molten iron spilled from a torpedo wagon pulled by a train along track at the steelworks, reacting with standing water.

The incident comes less than a week after two workers died in an explosion at the former SSI steelworks at Lackenby, Teesside.

An investigation has been launched into the deaths of the two workers, who had been working on decommissioning a section of the site's old coke ovens when they were killed.
