Taiwan bridge collapses onto boats leaving multiple people trapped

A bridge in has collapsed onto fishing boats leaving multiple people trapped underneath.

Dramatic footage shows the Nanfang'ao Bridge in Yilan Count, Taiwan fall into the river - just after a large oil tanker passed along it.

The tanker caught fire after crashing to the ground in the incident - which took place at 9.30am local time.

Later pictures show a tanker had smashed into the bridge structure with smoke billowing from the cab.

Despite the dramatic nature of the collapse, state media reported no casualties, with three Filipinos suffering from minor injuries.

Local reports say three fishing boats were underneath the bridge when it fell - with people still 'trapped in the rubble.'

Su'ao Township chief Lee Ming-che confirmed people five have been taken to hospital, with six still trapped.

"The bridge collapsed at around 9.30am while an oil tanker vehicle was on it, setting the vehicle on fire," said Shih I-chun, the secretary of the town's mayor said.

"We feared that some fishermen might be trapped in the boats."

The Su'ao District Fishermen's Association say emergency services rushed to the scene, report Focus Taiwan.

The bridge - completed in 1999 - is said to be the only single arch structure in the South Asian country.

It was said to have been ravaged by typhoon Mitag, which swept through the area on Monday bringing 162kph winds.

No cause for the collapse has been officially released.

Footage of the collapse shows a tanker travelling along the span of the bridge before it starts rocking - before the whole structure crashes into the river.

Authorities have pressed soldiers into the rescue effort and set up an emergency centre to run the operation.

The collapse of the bridge, which carries traffic over the busy fishing port, damaged three fishing boats and two vehicles, including the tanker, the officials said, though the reason for the collapse in clear weather was not immediately clear.

Late on Monday, typhoon Mitag, packing maximum winds of 162 kph (100 mph), swept past northeastern Taiwan, injuring 12 people and cutting power to more than 66,000 homes, with more than 150 flights cancelled.
