'Suspicious items' found at south Manchester property - the bomb squad was sent to assess them

Residents were evacuated from their homes on a major south Manchester road following the discovery of 'suspicious items' at a property.

The bomb squad was scrambled to the scene in Fallowfield.

Emergency services were stationed on Wilmslow Road, between Derby Road and Brook Road.

Police, paramedics and fire crews were at the scene.

Some residents told the Manchester Evening News they were evacuated from their flats on Wilmslow Road earlier in the evening.

It is understood the alarm was raised at around 9.50pm.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "Police are in attendance at a property on Wilmslow Road, Fallowfield, following the discovery of suspicious items within the property.

​"A property has been evacuated as a precaution while enquiries are ongoing.

​"Bomb disposal are due to make an assessment of items found within the property.

"This is believed to be an isolated incident and there is not believed to be any wider threat."

At around 11.30pm, a police cordon was put up between the Shell petrol station and nearby Victoria Road. The cordon was later extended - covering the area between the petrol station and Derby Road.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue staff were seen in discussions with officers.

Paramedics in incident response unit vehicles were seen on standby.

Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposals were seen getting equipment out of a van in the early hours of Saturday. The specialist gear was then put back into the vehicle.
