Adam Matthews and Max Stryjek will leave Sunderland when their contracts expire at the end of the month.
The pair were the two big names listed as the Black Cats confirmed their retained list of the 2019-20 season.
Both Reece James and Elliot Embleton are retained as, although they are out of contract, they have been have a contract offer pending.
Luke Molyneux and Robbin Ruiter’s exits were also confirmed, with both players already revealing they were leaving the Stadium of Light.
It was also announced that under-23 players Max Johnstone, Connor Shields and Alex Storey will also leave the club. A club statement thanked the players leaving, wishing them the “very best for the future”.
Welsh international Matthews signed from Celtic in 2015 but struggled to establish himself in the Sunderland first team before departing on loan to Bristol City.
However, the 27-year-old returned to play a big role at the club in the Championship season and made 28 appearances as the Black Cats narrowly missed out on promotion from League One last term.
Polish under-21 goalkeeper Stryjek didn’t play a first-team game for the club, although did feature in a Checkatrade Trophy game for the Under-23s at Rochdale in 2016.
He impressed on loan at Eastleigh last season with a string of excellent performances, and was named on the bench for Sunderland’s play-off final defeat to Charlton at Wembley in May.
