Sunderland marina boat fire sends huge pillars of black smoke billowing into sky

A boat caught on fire at Sunderland marina sending a huge plume of black smoke into the sky this morning.

An eyewitnesses video shows the boat alight as it is sat at the dockside shortly before 9am.

A second video, taken from a different vista, appears to show the fire spreading to nearby vessels too.

Fire crews have arrived and our dousing the boat with water from the dock.

Firefighters from Sunderland Central battled to extinguish the fire which had spread across three boats at the marina.

A spokeswoman from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two crews from Sunderland Central attended, three boats were on fire.

"Crews arrived shortly before 9am and left about 9:20am."

She added: "Crews have just put the stop in and are getting ready to leave now.

“We were called at 8.51am and had arrived at the scene before 9am. There were three boats and two crews from Sunderland Central attended.”

The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage to all three boats is not yet known.
