Simone Biles pulls out of Tokyo 2020 Olympics gymnastics team event

American superstar Simone Biles sensationally pulled out of the gymnastics team event at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Biles appeared to suffer an injury in her opening vault and left the arena with her trainer.

She did return to the floor, but the 24-year-old will not take part in any further events.

Biles turned in an uncharacteristic performance on the vault, posting a score of 13.766 - the worst of all six competitors.

Widely thought of as the best gymnast of all time, Biles was hunting an unprecedented six gold medals in Tokyo.

The US are taking on the Russian Olympic Committee in the team final and Biles made a string of unusual errors in qualifying.

When Biles returned to the arena, her right leg was wrapped. She hugged teammates Grace McCallum, Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles after taking off her bar grips.

Biles then put on a tracksuit to take a watching brief for the remainder of the event.

One of the Olympics' undoubted superstars, Biles was bidding for more success having claimed a haul of four gold medals in Rio five years ago.

But Biles admitted to concerns over the pressure she was under in an Instagram post on Monday, saying "the weight of the world" was on her shoulders.

She added that the Olympics were "no joke".
