Albert Sambi Lokonga misses Arsenal clash with Leeds after positive Covid-19 test

Arsenal midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga has missed the trip to Leeds after testing positive for Covid-19, the club revealed ahead of kick-off.

The Gunners' match at Elland Road is the only Saturday fixture to not be postponed as five others were cancelled after outbreaks of Covid at a number of clubs in the top tier.

Manchester United vs Brighton, Aston Villa vs Burnley, Southampton vs Brentford, Watford vs Crystal Palace and West Ham vs Norwich were all called off, while Everton's clash with Leicester on Sunday has also been postponed.

Mikel Arteta's men came close to making it through unscathed but Lokonga tested positive ahead of kick-off at Elland Road, with the club confirming the news in a tweet.

"Sambi Lokonga misses today's game after testing positive for Covid. Get well soon, Sambi," they wrote.

Earlier this week, Arteta bemoaned the process behind the Premier League choosing to postpone matches, insisting that greater clarity is needed.

He even hinted that the competition's integrity could be affected if more cancellations are made in the future.

"We need more clarity on why those games are not being played and what you need to not play a game so we all play in the same league, because at the end of the day we all play in the same league," the Spaniard told his pre-match press conference on Friday.

"Because at the end the most important thing is that we are able to maintain, within this context, the fairness of the competition. For me this is a big thing now."

Arsenal are looking to make it three wins in a row on Saturday and can move to within five points of Chelsea with a win.

A 3-0 victory against Southampton and 2-0 triumph over West Ham moved them into the top-four of the Premier League. The achievement is made more impressive considering it was done amid Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang being stripped of the captaincy.

Leeds currently sit in 16th place having struggled in their second season back in the top flight.

Marcelo Bielsa has seven first-team players out with injury at present including the likes of Patrick Bamford, Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper.
