Ryanair's Irish pilots vote to back strike action

Ryanair 's Irish pilots have voted in favour of industrial action in a strike ballot held by union Forsa.

The union says that 94 per cent of its members who took part in the vote chose to back industrial action.

Only pilots who were directly employed by Ryanair were eligible to vote in the ballot; Ryanair pilots employed by agencies were not balloted.

Forsa said that it would be writing to Ryanair management to outline strike plans next week, unless the airline agreed to its pay proposals by Monday 12th August.

That means that currently no strike dates are confirmed. It's worth noting that the union is required to give Ryanair at least one week's notice for any industrial action.

If strikes do take place these would be members of Forsa only, not all of Ryanair's pilots.

The dispute between the union and airline comes over pay, with Forsa saying that it was seeking pay levels and structures for its members.

Ian McDonnell, Fórsa assistant general secretary, said in a statement; "Ryanair’s directly-employed Irish-based pilots are simply seeking pay levels that are common and competitive in the commercial airline sector, from a company that made a more-than-healthy profit of €1 billion last year.

"They feel they have been forced into contemplating potentially-disruptive industrial action by a company that seems either unwilling or unable to negotiate in a professional and constructive manner.

"At this stage, only a substantive counter-proposal, which properly addresses all areas of our claim, will be enough to prevent us serving notice of industrial action next week."

It no doubt comes as another blow for Ryanair who is who are members of union BALPA, with walkouts planned in August and September.

The first walkouts are planned from 00:01 on Thursday 22nd August until 23:59 on Friday 23rd August, while the second walkouts are planned from 00:01 on Monday 2nd September until 23:59 on Wednesday 4th September.

Mirror Online has contacted a representative for Ryanair for comment.
