Ryanair flight to Newcastle diverted to Bordeaux in mid-air emergency

A Ryanair flight from Alicante to Newcastle has declared a mid-air emergency and has landed at Bordeaux.

Flight FR4079 was en route to the north east after taking off from Alicante at 8.40am local time when it squawked 7700 which is general emergency alert.

According to flight tracker websites the plane then turned around to head towards Bordeaux airport which was close by.

In order to line up for the runway it performed a small loop before coming into land.

The nature of the emergency is not known at this stage.

The flight was scheduled to land in Newcastle at 10.22am.

The plane is a Boeing 737-800 which seats 162 passengers in a two-class layout or 189 passengers in a one-class layout.

Ryanair is among the largest operators of the Boeing 737-800, with a fleet of over 400 737-800 aircraft serving routes across Europe, Middle East and North Africa.
